FLOOR LIGHT A810 by Alvar Aalto

I mentioned earlier about my obsession with lighting fixtures. Well, it includes lamps. I found this unusual lamp at my favourite furniture shop Anibou at Redfern. It was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1959. I must admit that when I first saw it, I didn’t think much of it. But the second time I saw it, I just couldn’t leave the shop without going home with it. The shade is made of white painted louvered steel. The base and stand are covered with black leather. It is so elegant. I have never seen anything like it. It is mesmerising when lit.

My first Artek lamp designed by Alvar Aalto in 1959.

Here is a close up of the shade. The only catch was I had to assemble the shade on to the base myself. I had to use an allen key. I was a bit nervous because I have never assembled anything in my life. But I wanted my husband to see it in its full glory when he got home from work. Actually, I didn’t want to annoy him with assembly requirements after a full days work. He really liked it.

The shade is made of hand-riveted, white painted louvered steel.

I don’t expect everyone to appreciate this lamp. It is not what many would consider traditional. But I like stuff that looks different.

The lamp fits right in between my console table and entertainment unit.
